Saumur & It's Surroundings
The Image Of A Civilisation Created By A River

The first natural park of the Loire has been created around a natural heritage, famous for culture and history. It was prized by kings and served as the source of inspiration to great artists. On 22nd December 1789 it was suggested that Saumur, Bourgueil, Chinon and Richelieu be joined into one large county.
Along the majestic Loire the confluence's with the Cher, Indre, Vienne and Le Thouet sculpture varied landscapes. The richness of the flora and fauna are proof of this wide diversity.
The numerous aspects of a region famous for its chateaux and wines come to life bathed in a soft light. You will discover the blue grey and gold reflections of the slate and 'tuffeau' in charming villages. Also the unusual scent of the troglodyte houses and caves and the picturesque image of huts and low walls of the vineyards.
Throughout history this exceptional heritage has retained its authenticity especially through local culinary traditions or crafts like river and canal boat building. Thus, in the kingdom of gourmets you will taste gastronomic dishes worthy of Pantagruel accompanied by fine wine.
